Why hasn't the state of Michigan hosted the Olympics?
Well, it is not for lack of trying. Let me say that.
The state of Michigan, more specifically the city of Detroit, has tried to bid for the Olympic games at least nine consecutive times between 1939 and 1972.
In 1939, Detroit went for its first attempt at hosting the Olympics, however, it was during the Great Depression. The city was even persuaded to offer $3M to build an Olympic stadium and swimming facility after Japan withdrew from hosting.
Unfortunately, Detroit was hit harder than most other cities in the country.
According to Michigan Radio,
While this initial bid was rejected, the Olympic Committee assured Detroit that one day, it would have the opportunity to host.
As of now, it has not happened yet.
In 1948, Detroit made a 'phantom bid.' However, the city was told not to interfere with London's bid on the Olympics since London was set to host the previous two games that were canceled because of World War II.
Just when Detroit thought they were going to be the host of the coveted games, it was ripped right from under them.
They came close to hosting the Olympics in 1968. The reason they didn't host in 1968 was because of one single vote.
Mexico City was able to offer 20 cents more per day to feed the Olympic athletes so they won the bid.
When was the last time Detroit tried to host the Olympics?
Sadly, the last time Detroit tried to host the Olympics was in 1972.
It was such a lost cause that during the IOC session in Rome, the names of the Detroit bidding team were misspelled. So that year, the Olympics were held in Munich, West Germany, marking the last attempt from Detroit.
