It was on November 1st, 1957 that the Mackinac Bridge opened for traffic. But the history of the bridge goes back to the late 1800s. (You'd know all of this if you've been to the museum, above Mama Mia's Pizzeria, in Mackinaw City)

According to ClickOnDetroit, it's the 3rd longest suspension bridge in the world. (See, they musta gone to the museum)
