Going to the U.P. this summer? See the ghost towns and The Gipper
Two summers ago I finally got a chance to get up to the Keweenaw Peninsula, in the U.P. It really is breathtaking. Like the Free Press says, it's "the upper peninsula of the Upper Peninsula". There's a lot of cool stuff up there. Houghton is a cool old town (with some very steep streets - what happens when they get snow on those streets? Yikes!) North of Houghton is Copper Country, with old copper mines you can still tour and old ghost towns waiting to be rediscovered. John Carlisle from the Free Press did a great rundown of some of the ghost towns you might want to go check out.
And if you go, don't forget to visit the George Gipp Memorial Park in Laurium, MI. (it's in the middle of a neighborhood) That's right, "The Gipper" was from the Keweenaw Peninsula. And this Sunday would've been his 123rd birthday.
