Facebook groups are a great way to not only be informed on what's going on in the world around you but can help you connect with likeminded people from all over the world to your very own communities, like right here in Lansing.

There are seriously Facebook groups for everything.

For a while, I was pretty conservative with my group joining and would only join ones either for work, ones I knew I'd interact with or to support friends.

However, once I started participating in more groups and finding myself immersed in them, I love them! Some of my favorites include a Mid-Century Modern group that celebrates all things of the "atomic age", a Twilight meme group (shoutout Locas), recipe groups, an "Aldi Nerd" group and a few of local ones.

How Facebook Defines Using the Platform for Groups

"Groups are a place to communicate about shared interests with certain people," Facebook says. "You can create a group for anything — your family reunion, your after-work sports team or your book club."

Literally anyone can decide to create a group or join an already-existing one, it then just comes down to the privacy settings.

Facebook gives two options: public groups and private groups and there are different stipulations from there.

For example, one public group I am in has it set up so anyone can see and react to content shared within the group, even without joining, but must get permissions from moderators to be able to comment, post, etc.

Private groups, though, will not be able to be seen by anyone else in the group until they join and an admin or moderator can approve them.

Benefits of Facebook Groups

Aside from being more informed about what is going on in your community and coming together with people over similar interests, Facebook groups also open up a space for communication, learning, nostalgia, advice and more.

Facebook groups are also extremely beneficial to small businesses, online businesses and content creators as it is a way for people to spread the word about what they do and share it with people who would also be interested.

Even all of those benefits aside, it can be as simple as just having fun!

Whatever the "benefit" you get out of it may be, there are many reasons someone would join a group on Facebook and we've actually got quite a few fantastic ones right here in the Lansing area:

LOOK: 50 famous memes and what they mean

With the infinite number of memes scattered across the internet, it's hard to keep track. Just when you've grasped the meaning of one hilarious meme, it has already become old news and replaced by something equally as enigmatic. Online forums like Tumblr, Twitter, 4chan, and Reddit are responsible for a majority of meme infections, and with the constant posting and sharing, finding the source of an original meme is easier said than done. Stacker hunted through internet resources, pop culture publications, and databases like Know Your Meme to find 50 different memes and what they mean. While the almost self-replicating nature of these vague symbols can get exhausting, memes in their essence can also bring people closer together—as long as they have internet access.
