Here in Mid-Michigan, we're used to annual visits from the traveling vendor show Shipshewana on the Road.

But how many of us have actually been to Shipshewana, Indiana? It's less than two hours from Lansing and boasts an award-winning concert venue: Blue Gate Performing Arts Center.

Country artist Dustin Lynch took the stage there this past Friday night, and totally rocked the joint by all accounts.

But before Dustin took over, a relatively new country trio called Deltona got things started. And they made a pretty good first impression.

Deltona Opens for Dustin Lynch in Shipshewana

Deltona features Georgia native Ned Abernathy on vocals, Ohio's Caleb Miller on guitar, and Tennessee's Chris Deaton playing cajon.

The trio formed after a writers' round at Nashville's famous Bluebird Café, and their sound landed somewhere between country and Southern rock.

Think backyard tailgate party with a little extra volume.

The crowd, including a particularly enthusiastic group of women in an upper-level suite, gave them plenty of encouragement.

And the guys seemed genuinely surprised by the reception.

They also weren't afraid to poke a little fun at themselves.

While Dustin Lynch had tour buses parked outside, Deltona admitted they'd arrived in a rented Honda.

They didn't even have a printer for their setlist.

Instead, Abernathy held up a paper plate with the songs written on the bottom.

Hey, whatever works.

Their 30-minute set mixed originals like "Point of You," "Say No More," "The Country," and the live debut of "So Much for So Long" with covers of songs by Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, and Kenny Chesney.

They wrapped things up with "Party's in the Back," their collaboration with Billy Ray Cyrus.

For a group still working to establish itself, Deltona certainly didn't seem out of place on that stage.

Dustin Lynch Brings His Biggest Hits to Blue Gate

When Dustin Lynch walked out, the packed house was already on its feet.

He wasted absolutely no time getting into the hits, opening with "Honky Tonk Heartbreaker," "Mind Reader," "Ridin' Roads," and "Thinking 'Bout You."

Dustin admitted he was battling a sinus infection, but said the crowd was singing so loudly it was helping him get through the night.

He also made it clear he wasn't interested in anybody sitting around being shy.

Sing. Dance. Have fun. Make some memories.

Pretty reasonable requests, if you ask me.

Dustin also gave fans a taste of his upcoming album, Clean Slate, which is scheduled for release on October 30, including performances of "Made in a Bottle" and "Easy to Love."

The Emotional Story Behind "Cowboys and Angels"

One of the night's more meaningful moments came during "Cowboys and Angels."

Dustin stopped midway through the song to thank the Blue Gate for giving him and his band a place to perform back in 2021, when much of the live music industry was still struggling with COVID restrictions.

He hadn't forgotten that.

He also shared that he'd written "Cowboys and Angels" for his grandparents, who celebrated their 71st wedding anniversary this year.

Photos of the couple appeared on the big screen, including one from their younger days and another showing them joining Dustin onstage at the Grand Ole Opry.

Pretty cool moment.

And quite the contrast from what happened a little later.

A Surprise Marriage Proposal Steals the Show

During "Tequila on a Boat," Dustin spotted a woman celebrating her birthday and invited her down to the stage to share a drink.

Not a bad birthday present.

But the biggest surprise came during a medley of "Hey! Baby" and "Good Girl."

Dustin had just been talking about breakup songs and how the best part of breaking up was making up.

That's when a couple made their way to the front of the stage, and the guy proposed. Right there in the middle of the concert.

The crowd went nuts.

Dustin stopped the band to congratulate the newly engaged couple and said the night had already been one of the best shows they'd played all year.

That proposal pretty much sealed the deal.

Dustin Lynch Honors His Country Music Heroes

Along with his own hits, Dustin worked in several songs from artists who influenced him.

There was George Strait's "It Just Comes Natural," Toby Keith's "Courtesy of the Red, White and Blue," and Tom Petty's "American Girl."

He also broke out Alabama's "Mountain Music" later in the show.

And when it came time for "She Cranks My Tractor," Dustin gave a shoutout to the farmers in the audience before admitting something pretty funny.

He called it the dumbest song he'd ever written.

But he also thanked the fans for turning it into a hit and making it so much fun to perform.

At least he's self-aware.

The final stretch included "Hell of a Night," "Seein' Red," and a closing performance of "Small Town Boy."

By then, Dustin had pretty much delivered exactly what he'd promised at the beginning of the night.

A whole lot of fun.

Not bad for a Friday night in Shipshewana.
