Check Out This 1800s Detroit Mansion on Airbnb
Usually, if I stay in an Airbnb, the accommodations are modest.
When my adult son and my mother came up to Michigan for a visit recently, they wanted to splurge a little bit. The Airbnb my kid chose to rent in Detroit for a couple of nights was anything but modest. As a matter of fact, it probably rates as the swankiest place I've ever slept at all.

My son rented half of this 1891 David C. Whitney mansion for two nights. Does that name sound familiar? David Whitney, Jr. was one of Detroit's richest men in the 1800s, making his fortune in lumber. His son, David C. Whitney, bought this home on Alfred Street in Detroit's Brush Park area back in 1893, according to the Detroit Historical Society.

The house has a storied past - and it's even been featured in a Hollywood movie!
Avengers star Tom Hiddleston and Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton made a gothic vampire movie here in 2013 called "Only Lovers Left Alive".
Shortly after that movie was filmed, home renovator Jeff Cowin bought the place and got to work renovating it, according to the home's listing on Airbnb.
It's obviously been a labor of love for Cowin. We found the mansion to be breathtaking in many ways - if not still a work in progress.
The intricate woodwork throughout the home is mesmerizing. Scroll through some of the pics we took.
