BWL Chili Cook-Off is this Friday – how many Scoville heat units can you take?
This Friday marks the return of the BWL Chili Cook-Off. The event will take place at Adado Riverfront Park in downtown Lansing and runs from 5:30 until 9PM. (Stop by and say "hi" to our buddy Chris Tyler - he'll be broadcasting live, you know)
If you go, one question we think you should have for the various chili chefs: "What's the Scoville heat unit rating on your chili?" The Scoville heat unit number tells you how hot the chili is. Most commercial hot sauces are rated at 2000 units or less. But, you can get sauces that rank over a million heat units, up to about 15 million heat units! However at some point above that, they become "food additives" that can only be used sparingly because they're so hot.
According to Foodbeast.com, the hottest new chili pepper is called Pepper X and is ranked at over 3 million Scoville heat units.
So, have a glass of water handy if you bite into one of those.
Have fun at the Cook-Off. Here's the story about Pepper X, so you sound like a pro.
