Bless Their Hearts, This North Carolina City Has a Street Named for Mackinac Island

It's a 15 hour drive from Raleigh, North Carolina to the Straits of Mackinac, but that didn't stop a subdivision developer in the Tar Heel State from naming a street after Mackinac Island.

Mackinac Island Lane runs north-south from the Raleigh city limits on the southeast side of town in the Battle Ridge neighborhood. The street runs for just over a mile and entirely in a residential neighborhood. Interestingly, the random Michiganized name is not part of a Michigan-themed subdivision. There's no Grand Traverse Place or Harbor Springs Way. Mackinac Island Lane stands alone here as a beacon to the great northland.

An eagle-eyed traveler shared the Mackinac-inspired name to the "You're Not Up North Until You Cross the Mackinac Bridge" Facebook page where one wily Michigander likely predicted correctly,

I bet they pronounce it wrong.

So if someone tells you they live on Mack-in-ack Island Lane know they don't have a fudge shop down the street and they likely wear UNC's powder blue rather than U of M's maize-and-blue.
