Last year, Jeff Kresnak, from Caledonia, was lucky enough to win one of the Michigan DNR's Pure Michigan Hunts. According to MLive.com, Jeff decided not to take a bear with the tag he won unless it was a really big male. So, during Michigan's bear season last September, Jeff spent 8 hours tracking (with the help of dogs) a big male black bear south of Copemish, MI (in Manistee County, between Cadillac and Frankfort) Just before dark, Jeff got a clean shot off and killed the bear, which was HUGE. The Michigan DNR estimated the 8-year-old bear Jeff took weighed between 500-600 pounds.

Recently, the Boone and Crockett Club, which tracks record game animals and determines trophy bears by the size of their skulls, finally determined that Jeff's bear was the fifth largest ever taken in Michigan and in the top 250 for black bears taken anywhere in North America.
