Like scary movies? There are plenty of them with giant killer ants, spiders, alligators, sharks and even killer tomatoes. Yes, I believe there is even one about locusts. Well, the next cicada movie will be real.

One of my crazy memories as a kid was getting up one morning in Chicago and hearing this loud, ear piercing, buzzing noise. There were thousands of Cicadas on trees, and they were scary to say the least. I had to pinch myself to see if I was dreaming. Mom then explained about the 17 year cicada drama that we have to deal with.

Most of us have been hearing about this, and it is fast approaching. Not sure exactly when, but starting sometime in April or May. I guess it depends on the latitude. Every 17 years cicadas will come up from underground in many states, from New York to Illinois and reaching south to Georgia. They are known as Brood X, as in the Roman numeral for 10 according to earthsky.com.

There are almost 4,000 species of Cicadas, and for close to four weeks, wooded and suburban areas will be buzzing with cicadas, some in search of mates. After mating, each female will lay hundreds of eggs on small tree branches.

Then the adults are history and will die. When the eggs hatch, new cicada nymphs fall from the trees and burrow back underground, and then it starts all over again.

I find all this so fascinating, and to be honest, kind of fun. Also don't worry if your dog eats any, they are full of protein.
