That young man in the picture, with his hands expertly placed on the steering wheel is my son. He has just started driving, which he is allowed to do if he is accompanied by me or his mother. He's doing really well so far.

So well, as a matter of fact that I have been trying to talk him in to driving me just about everywhere we go. It hasn't always worked, though. I mean, when you're a teenager it's not always cool to hang out with your parents.

One thing that has opened my eyes during this whole deal is that you never really take into consideration how experienced your fellow drivers are out there.

For example, last Saturday afternoon we were driving around and he was behind the wheel. We were getting ready to make a right turn from a side road onto the highway. Apparently in the opinion of the woman behind us, my son hesitated too long at the stop sign. This hesitation caused the lady to blare the horn and raise both hands in the air (one holding a smartphone) at my son, which he saw in the rear view.

My son promptly turned, and as he did he muttered a few words at the woman under his breath that would've probably caused me to drive off the road had I been at the wheel.

Of course we then had a conversation about how it's not only good to keep the vehicle on the road, but it's also a good idea to keep your langauge away from the ditch in these situations.

I wasn't real hard on him though. After all, I know that there will always be times that he acts like his mother.
