You may remember the story, two weeks ago, about the discovery of a 93-pound Petoskey stone in the waters of Lake Michigan, off the Leelanau Peninsula.

Well, according to the Free Press, the Michigan DNR may want their rock back. It seems (and I didn't know this) that you're limited to taking 25 pounds of rocks or minerals from state lands per year in Michigan. The fine for taking more than that is up to $500. And since the Petoskey stone that Tim O'Brien found weighed 93 pounds, well, the DNR says, "We just want to talk to him, because we haven't been able to have a conversation with him." Ed Golder, with the DNR, says the rock is a "fairly unusual find". And according to this article, that means it could end up in the Michigan Historical Center in downtown Lansing.

I'd love to see it in the museum, but I'd also hate to lose a 26-pound Petoskey stone, if I found one next summer.

Hmmm, if he pays the fine, does Tim get to keep the rock? ('Cause I'm sure it's worth more than $500)

My guess is, "no".
