In November of last year, Great Basin National Park archaeologist Eva Jensen found a Winchester Model 1873 44-40 cal.rifle leaning up against a juniper tree in the middle of nowhere.

According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, a year later, they don't know who put the rifle there, but they do know exactly how old it is and ABOUT how long it sat in the desert. The short answer is, "a long time."
