Whitmer Is Working On A Plan For Free College Tuition To Front-line Workers

If you're a front-line worker during the COVID-19 pandemic here in Michigan, Governor Gretchen Whitmer is working on a program to give you a tuition-free college education.

According to MLive, Whitmer announced her "Future of Frontliners" program on Wednesday, which would provide said front-line workers with a tuition-free pathway to a college, as well as technical certificate to those essential workers who don't have a college degree.

This program was inspired after the World War II legislation which allowed returning soldiers to have educational services provided.

“The Futures for Frontliners program is our way of saying ‘thank you’ to those who have risked their lives on the front lines of this crisis. This program will ensure tuition-free college opportunities and give these dedicated Michiganders an opportunity to earn a technical certificate, associate degree or even a bachelor’s degree,” Gov. Whitmer had released in a press release. “I want to assure all of our workers we will never forget those of you who stepped up and sacrificed their own health during this crisis. You’re the reason we’re going to get through this.”

A few types of people who would receive the benefit are grocery store workers and hospital workers.

As of right now, there is no word on where the money for this is coming from.
