Touring the Grand Haven Lighthouse

According to MLive, The Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy is hosting the event to celebrate the work done to restore the lighthouse. They've recently made repairs to the lantern room, it's exterior deck, railings, doors and more.

Do you want to take a guess as to how much those repairs cost? A whopping $75,000. The conservancy plans on raising money for other future repairs. You can read more on the story at MLive's website.

The History of the Grand Haven Lighthouse & Pier

According to the The Grand Haven Lighthouse Conservancy, the first lighthouse was built in 1839. Unfortunately, due to the location and severe weather, erosion occurred and in 1852 the tower and cottage collapsed.

A second tower was built on the bluff in 1855 and a light installed in 1856 to help direct seamen. The South Pier was finished in 1893 but the Bluff Light remained as the main beacon until 1905.
