Michigan area codes

The way some Michiganders have to make phone calls is about to change.

For the first time in more than 20 years, it looks like Michigan's about to get a new area code. The 679 area code will overlay the same geographic area currently served by 313.

As the number of telephone numbers needed in Michigan has grown over the years, so has its number of area codes.
