Sushi and Waffles—Two New Eateries are Opening in Okemos
It's time to prepare your tastebuds and your stomachs to embark on a new culinary adventure because two new restaurants are coming to town.
Two New Restaurants are Opening This Year in Okemos
Two new restaurants are set to open in Okemos before the year is out.
One restaurant is a sushi and grill and the other will serve Liège waffles.

Both restaurants are set to open at 5100 Marsh Road, in the plaza located at the corner of Marsh Road and Central Park Drive.
New Sushi Restaurant Opening Fall 2023
The sushi place, Kaiyō Sushi & Grill, will actually be taking over the old location of Maru Sushi, which closed two years ago this month.
The Lansing State Journal got to speak to Kai Zhung, the general manager, and here's what we can expect from the menu; "sushi, poke bowls, hibachi grilled dishes, also udon noodle soups", along with sashimi, fried rice, and more.
Although there's no exact opening date just yet, Zhung did say they expect to open this September.
Waffle Restaurant Coming to Okemos
Also hoping to open in September is Yello Waffle. Mid-September, to be exact.
Yello Waffle will be serving up the unique and delicious Liège waffle. The Belgian specialty is unlike the typical Belgian waffle you might have come across. Here's what a Liège waffle is:
Invented in the middle ages in the city of Liege, it is a unique member of the waffle family. Made with yeast, eggs, milk, and butter, it's something like brioche. But it's the addition of pearl sugar, made from beets, that makes Liege waffles more like sweet, crunchy pastries than the fluffy Belgian waffles you know.
And here's what they look like...
I had the pleasure of enjoying one of these types of waffles while I was in Amsterdam. It was warm and served with whipped cream, and it was literally one of the best things I've ever eaten. I'm looking forward to tasting one of these waffles again soon and supporting a locally, woman-owned business!
