Spartans and Wolverines Headed to the New XFL
Next February, just when you get thought pro football was over - the XFL will happen. The XFL, which already played one season in 2001, is still owned by Vince McMahon of the WWF (now WWE), but he says this time things will be different. We'll see.
Let's pause now for a trivia question: Who won the first XFL Championship Game? Our answer in a moment.
To prepare for the 2020 season, the XFL Draft has been going on this week to fill the 8 teams. The draft started with the XFL assigning 8 quarterbacks to the 8 teams. Two Big Ten QBs were among those - Cardale Jones (Ohio State) went to the DC Defenders and Matt McGloin (Penn State) went to the New York Guardians (There's no Detroit team - and I'm not a big fan of the team names - except for the Seattle Dragons)
According to MLive.com, so far the actual drafted players include some former Detroit Lions, Michigan Wolverines and former Michigan State QB Connor Cook, who was drafted in the NFL by the Raiders and spent some time with Cincinnati, Carolina and the Lions. He was the first player actually drafted by the XFL's Houston Roughnecks. Good luck to all.
Trivia answer: On Apr 21, 2001 the Los Angeles Xtreme defeated the San Francisco Demons 38-6 in the first XFL Championship game at the Los Angeles Coliseum.
