You may start to see more pelicans in Michigan this summer. I've always thought of pelicans as a coastal bird, but apparently they breed in the interior of North America and winter on the southern coasts. And now, according to MetroTimes.com, the American white pelican has expanded it's breeding range into eastern Michigan. They've been seeing more and more of these pelicans this spring in Monroe County, MI. The article says they've been seen on around Lake Michigan, but I don't think I've ever seen one. They have about a ten foot wingspan, so I would think I would've noticed something that big.

Huh. Who knew? Be on the lookout.
