At approximately 4PM on New Year's day, a loud boom was heard in Pewamo and other areas of Ionia County (including their friends in Westphalia). It could have been fireworks. It could have been Michigan fans falling to their knees after the Outback Bowl.

But, it wasn't - according to WOOD-TV, it was a "frost quake". That's right - the weather's been so cold around here - IT CRACKED THE EARTH!

Frost quakes are not unusual. Early Tuesday, they had a pretty big one up near Edmonton, Alberta. Frost quakes occur when moisture in the ground freezes and expands. And when it expands, it makes funny noises. Same thing happened to me after Christmas dinner.
