Michigan State Says ‘No Thanks’ To March Madness
They made it official yesterday afternoon. Their season is officially over.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the Michigan State women's basketball program announced that it will not be participating in a postseason tournament. Coach Suzy Merchant explained that the decision was made after talking with the senior student-athletes and the rest of the team:
"I am incredibly proud of what this year's team accomplished under such challenging circumstances," Merchant said in a released statement. "While we could have participated in postseason play, after talking with our senior student-athletes (and our entire team), it truly is in our student-athletes' best interest right now to rest, recover and then we can begin to prepare for the future as the spring unfolds."
It's been a very challenging year for the Spartans as they were plagued by injuries throughout the season and finished with a 16-15 record. That record wouldn't have gotten them in the Women's NCAA tournament. However, they would've received a bid for the WNIT.
