These 6 States Think They Have Better Fall Scenery Than Michigan
Michigan has some of the most breathtaking fall scenery in America, but half a dozen states have even prettier views - according to Lawnstarter's list of 2023's Best States to Visit This Fall.
Those behind the list tried to be as fair as possible, but trying to stay objective while judging fall scenery is inherently difficult.
How States' Fall Scenery Was Evaluated
Each state's fall scenery was rated by three metrics:
- how many weeks of fall foliage could be expected;
- how many days that peak fall foliage could be expected;
- and its number of scenic drives.

Using these criteria, fall scenery in Michigan ranked 7th in the United States.
So, who's got it better? Here's what the survey says.
6. Maine
Fall in New England is legendary, so it may come as a bit of surprise to learn that Maine is the only state in that region whose fall scenery was judged to be better than that of Michigan.
5. Idaho
Idaho's fall scenery ranks at #5 on the list of 2023's Best States to Visit This Fall.
4. Washington
Idaho's neighbor to the west, Washington, ranks at #4.
3. California
While fall in parts of California is indeed gorgeous, the sheer size of the state affords it more "scenic drives" - likely pushing its ranking higher than it otherwise might have been. California comes in at #3.
2. Utah
Fall scenery is more than just foliage. Utah ranks at #2.
1. New York
If you've seen the Adirondacks in fall, then you know New York's scenery can take your breath away. New York ranks at #1 among 2023's Best States to Visit This Fall.
