Michigan’s Country Music Scene: Who Is Cooper Johnson?
Still in his teens, Cooper Johnson is already making waves as a rising star on the Michigan country music scene.
Growing Up in Michigan
Cooper’s journey into music began early, influenced by his stepfather’s band. From the time he was just a toddler up to middle school, he grew up surrounded by music - listening to his stepdad's band rehearsing in the basement.
He credits his Eaton County upbringing for shaping his own character and music today.

“The small towns in Michigan are full of like-minded people who love hunting, fishing, and getting rowdy. I spent my childhood building forts, hunting, and walking through the mud,” Cooper says. It's those real-life backwoods experiences that deeply influence his sound and storytelling.
For Cooper, songwriting is all about telling personal stories. His song “Country Up In Heaven” imagines a conversation with God about what comes next after life. Other Cooper Johnson-written songs reflections his own hopes, dreams, and struggles.
A Blend of Influences with a Unique Sound
Cooper Johnson’s style combines classic and contemporary country, drawing inspiration from artists like Alan Jackson, Chris Stapleton, and Kameron Marlowe. However, it’s his distinctive voice that truly sets him apart. “I have my own sound, and I won’t be compared vocally to other artists,” says Cooper, confident in the individuality he brings to the genre.
Connecting with the Audience on Stage
When Cooper performs, his goal is simple: to make people smile and forget about their troubles. He wants to create an experience that lifts people up, especially those who might be having a tough week. "I like to think that I can be the happiness people need for a few hours," he shares. His connection with the audience makes his performances unforgettable.
Collaborations and Career Highlights
Cooper’s young career has featured some exciting milestones. He’s shared the stage with Randy Houser and has a 2025 show on the books with Dylan Schneider. Cooper has had his songs featured on radio and TV, and gained thousands of streams in just a week.

Looking ahead, Cooper is eager to collaborate with more Michigan country artists, like Kanin Wren and Madison Olivia, to expand his fanbase and bring fresh sounds to his music.
Overcoming Challenges and Growth
Like many artists, Cooper has faced challenges. His biggest struggle? Being his own harshest critic. However, he’s learning to appreciate the support he receives from fans. “When I see people taking videos of me, tipping me, and wanting pictures, I realize they enjoy listening to me,” he reflects. This has helped him grow confident and motivated in his career.
Giving Back to His Community
Cooper stays connected to his local community, often playing at local festivals and events in the Eaton Rapids area. He credits his hometown for its unwavering support and continues to give back. His future goals include releasing a full album and music videos in 2025, as well as traveling to perform in new states.
Looking Ahead
Cooper's optimistic about where his young career will take him. "As long as I get to a point where I can give back, and give to others, the community, and share my faith to crowds, I’m happy."
