Yummy: Michigan Will Have a Tasty Month of Free Taco Tuesdays

Michigan Taco Bell fans are in for a fantastic, weeks-long Taco Tuesday celebration. Free tacos for all.

In celebration of the chain's lawsuit win, which argued "Taco Tuesday" is commonplace language and shouldn't be trademarked, they're giving away a free Doritos Locos Taco for several Tuesdays in-a-row.

How to get free tacos at Taco Bell

The fast-food giant is giving away free Doritos Locos Tacos for the next few Tuesdays:

• 08/15
• 08/22
• 08/29
• 09/05

Plus, they're donating $5 million to a food delivery fund. So, people can get a free taco from any restaurant serving tacos.

The Taco Tuesday Lawsuit

Believe it or not a couple of businesses own or have owned the trademark for Taco Tuesday. A restaurant in the state of New Jersey and a different fast-food company that just opened three locations in West Michigan. (I hope the rest of the state will get them soon.)

So, how did a lawsuit over tacos happen?

• Taco John's has been around since 1969 in Cheyenne, Wyoming. They trademarked "Taco Tuesday" in 1989.
• In May 2023, Taco Bell filed a lawsuit stating "Taco Tuesday" was commonplace and shouldn't be trademarked, in so many words. (They were not suing for damages/money.)

• Taco John's decided to end litigation and give Taco Bell the win. So, that means Michigan restaurants (of any kind) can start promoting their own Taco Tuesday, legally.
• At one point, the CEO of Taco John's cracked "I'd like to thank our worthy competitors at Taco Bell for reminding everyone that Taco Tuesday is best celebrated at Taco John's."

Now, we all get to benefit from the joy of Taco Tuesday. Even more so in Genesee County with two new locations opening soon.
