‘Swatting’ Incident at East Lansing High Triggers Calls for Stronger Michigan Laws
Swatting sounds like something you do to a mosquito. It's not. It's when someone makes a fake emergency call, so police, often heavily armed, rush to a location expecting the worst. Think bomb threats, shootings, hostage situations... all made up.

This is not a prank; it's a chaos generator that puts real people in very real danger, something East Lansing High School recently experienced firsthand.
East Lansing High School Swatting Incident
On May 1, 2026, a swatting incident occurred in Mid-Michigan at East Lansing High School in the form of a bomb threat that triggered a full law enforcement response. Students and staff were sent home early, according to the Lansing State Journal, and left wondering if the threat was real while police treated it like a legitimate emergency.

That's the problem. You don't get to yell "just kidding" after the sirens, lockdowns, and fear have already arrived.
Michigan Law: What Happens If You're Found Guilty of Swatting
Michigan already has some penalties on the books, but in light of recent happenings, Attorney General Dana Nessel is calling for harsher consequences. Here are the current penalties for swatting-related crimes:
- False report: up to a 93-day misdemeanor
- False report resulting in injury: up to a 5-year felony
- False report resulting in serious injury: up to 10-year felony
- False report resulting in death: up to a 15-year felony
Layer in extras like:
- Terrorism threats: up to 20 years
- Bomb threats: 4-year felony
- Fines up to $20,000
So yes, that "prank" can land you somewhere behind bars and very limited Wi-Fi.
Michigan's AG Proposing Swatting Law Changes
Attorney General Dana Nessel isn't impressed with the current setup. She's pushing for tough laws, saying penalties don't match the panic and risk these incidents create. Swatting drains police resources, terrifies communities, and can go sideways fast.
