Bed Bugs Found in Michigan High School Classroom
Bed bugs. Two words that can clear a classroom faster than a surprise pop quiz.
What Happened at Charlotte High School
This week, a post on the Charlotte Public Schools Facebook page (embedded below) confirmed a small number of bed bugs were found in a high school classroom, with a separate student report in an unrelated classroom the following morning.

In both cases, students were immediately removed from the affected areas and relocated. The district brought in a professional pest control company and has now scheduled a K-9 inspection to ensure nothing else is hiding in backpacks or baseboards.
How the District Responded
Before you go into panic mode, take a breath. According to the district and guidance from the Barry-Eaton District Health Department, bed bugs are a nuisance, not a health crisis. They do not spread disease. Bites can itch and appear in small clusters, often in a line, similar to mosquito bites. If there are medical concerns, families should contact their doctor.

School officials are also contacting households of affected students, including siblings, to offer guidance on treatment and prevention. Because bed bugs can hitchhike from hotels, airplanes, movie theaters, and just about anywhere people gather. The original source is often impossible to pinpoint.
Where Families Can Find More Information
The district says infestations in schools are unlikely, but inspections and treatments will continue out of caution. Families looking for more information can visit the State of Michigan's bed bug resources on the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services website, or click here.

Due to privacy laws, specific classrooms and students will not be identified. Unpleasant? Absolutely. A public health emergency. Not quite. Charlotte Public Schools is treating it seriously, swiftly, and with professional support. And that is exactly how you handle something that crawls in uninvited.
