Michigan's 2026 Fishing Season Preview

Spring in Michigan means three things: potholes, construction cones, and somebody loudly insisting they are going to land a state record. The 2026 fishing season officially launches April 1, and no, that is not a prank by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR).

Michigan Fishing Licenses for 2026

Your current fishing license expires March 31, 2026. The new 2026 license is valid through March 31, 2027. If you're 17 or older and casting into public waters, you need one. Here's the damage:

Resident Annual: $26 plus $1 surcharge
Nonresident Annual: $76 plus $1 surcharge
Seniors 65 plus: $11 plus $1 surcharge
Daily License: $10
Optional Youth License: $2

Grab yours on the Michigan DNR Hunt Fish app or at a license retail location. If you opt to use the app, watch for the auto-renewal feature so 2027 you doesn't end up panic buying one at the boat launch.

Key 2026 Michigan Fishing Dates

Mark your calendar for these species:

Trout opener and Lower Peninsula walleye and pike: April 25
Upper Peninsula walleye and pike: May 15
Muskellunge possession: June 6, including Lake St. Clair and the Detroit and St. Clair rivers
Bass possession statewide: May 23, expect Lake St. Clair and connected rivers open June 20

Catch-and-immediate-release fishing remains open year-round on most waters.
