Michigan deer hunters are about to experience something truly groundbreaking in the woods this fall: paperwork... but on your phone. Beginning in 2026, Michigan hunters will now have the option to use electronic kill tags through the state's Hunt Fish mobile app, following approval from the Michigan Natural Resources Commission.

The change applies to several species, including deer, bear, bobcat, fisher, marten, and otter, giving hunters the option to ditch the old-school paper tag and validate their harvest digitally.

Instead of attaching a physical tag to your deer like it's a luggage tag, hunters can open the Hunt Fish app, answer a few questions, and validate their kill directly on their phone. For those Michigan hunters who spend time where cell service goes to die, you can still log the kill without service. The app stores the information and uploads it once you eventually reconnect to service.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) says the new system should also save money by reducing printing and distribution costs. It may also reduce license losses, which totaled 27,475 in 2024 alone, according to Bridge Michigan.

Before panic sets in deep in the woods, conservation officers can still verify your tag. If your phone battery gives up, officers can simply run your ID to confirm the tag purchase and validation.

Don’t Worry, Paper Tags Aren’t Going Away... Yet

Hunters who prefer the traditional method can still use physical tags. The digital version is optional, not mandatory. So if you like the nostalgia of scribbling on a tag with frozen fingers in November, Michigan will still happily accommodate your commitment to tradition.
