Looking for a scary movie with concrete ties to Michigan this Halloween? Barbarian turns a Detroit rental into the kind of getaway where "get away" becomes literal.

You know that first night in an Airbnb? You're sleeping in somebody else's bed, learning which floorboards creak, and hoping that locked door is hiding something innocent, like Christmas decorations. If this gives you an uneasy feeling, congratulations. This movie is for you.

A Detroit Airbnb Is the Setup for Barbarian

The 2022 horror film follows a woman arriving in Detroit for a job interview. Her rental is double-booked, and a stranger is already inside.

Personally, at this point I'd head to a hotel, and this would be the world's shortest horror movie. Give me a waffle machine and a hallway full of witnesses. The star of the movie stays anyway.

A Michigan-Based Horror Movie With Jaws Vibes

Like Jaws, Michigan-based Barbarian lets the unseen do some serious damage to your nerves. You're bracing for something before you know exactly what you're bracing for. Then... the villain is finally revealed, and I promise, it's not what you were expecting.

That's all you're getting from me. Go in knowing as little as possible. Half the fun is yelling at the television, as if the people inside can hear you.

Where Michigan Viewers Can Stream Barbarian

As of October 13, 2026, it's included with a Hulu subscription and can be rented or downloaded from most online media stores.
