Michigan Leads The Nation In Online Betting Activity In 2023
Michigan sports fans love to hedge their bets. We have some of the best (and worst) teams in America, so it's easy to want to throw down a little money to root for (or against them) in hopes you make a penny or three along the way.
While sports betting in the state of Michigan has been legal for just shy of 5 years, it's a large share of our gambling. We've also expanded to have 26 casinos across the state, and we love visiting them.
A new report from the American Gaming Association shows that Michigan has the largest online sports betting market in America. We spent an incredible 3.5 billion dollars in 2023 gambling, with 1.92 billion of those bets being online. Considering we're only barely in the top ten of states when it comes to population, Michigan is handing a huge amount of our income over to sports books.
It's not just a flash in the pan craze. We've also been holding on to our title of highest spend, and for the third year running we've spent the most money in America on bets. We're up 9% from 2022, showing that the sports gambling market in Michigan is only growing as it ages.
Could Michigan become the new Las Vegas? Maybe not- Nevada still holds the title when it comes to overall gambling spend. But, it's still nice to know we're having our own big boom here in the mitten state.
Our biggest city, Detroit, made it into the top 20 commercial casino markets by revenue in 2023. They brought in an incredible $1.236 billion for the state. Since some of this money goes into special funds via taxes, the more Michiganders bet, the more schools and communities win. (As long as they're doing it responsibly.)
And remember, The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) reminds you to play responsibly. If you or a loved one have a problem, call1-800-270-7117 for resources.
