According to the data, the University of Michigan is the most dangerous college in America. While you may think to yourself that Ann Arbor itself is a pretty safe town, the study concludes that it's the place your student is most likely to be in harms way.
Before you cancel your plans and change where you want to get your degree, there is a reasonable excuse for the high numbers. They aren't all technically from the time period that the study was focused on.
The report claims that 1,468 cases were reported on the University of Michigan campus. The school in second place, Ohio State, had 588 cases, making it look like the University of Michigan is extremely dangerous.
Michigan landed top of the list due to a technicality. Most of the numbers come from a specific case involving Dr. Robert Anderson, a former Michigan professor who was found guilty of assaulting over a thousand students while he was employed by the school.
The school settled the lawsuits in 2021, shoving decades worth of abuse into one year's worth of data, it made their numbers look inflated compared to reality. Meaning University of Michigan didn't actually see that much actual crime or violence during the 2021 school year. So, no, the University of Michigan isn't actually that scary these days. (And since Dr. Anderson died in 2008, it's unlikely that specific level of crime will return).
The school has since held themselves accountable for the issues, and worked towards making strives towards a safer campus. So, rest assured that today's University of Michigan is a relatively safe school to attend.
