This Michigan City Has Been Named The Worst in America for Renters
For a lot of people with the current housing market rising to all time highs, renting is their only choice.
And in some places, it can be equally expensive or cheaper to rent than it is to own a home, especially if you don't have a large down payment to put down on your own space.
But if you're planning to rent, or do rent, there is one city in Michigan you may want to avoid according to the experts at Wallethub.
Which city is the worst in America for renters?
According to the data Detroit, Michigan has been named as the worst city in America for renters.
To help prospective renters get the most bang for their buck, WalletHub compared more than 180 U.S. cities based on 21 key indicators of rental attractiveness and quality of life. The data set ranges from historical rental-price changes to the cost of living to job availability.
Why is it so hard to rent in Detroit? There are two key factors that make it hard to find somewhere reasonable to live in Michigan's largest city.
The first is affordability and availability, because either housing is on the higher end with lots of luxury apartments popping up downtown. There also seems to be a rare amount of properties available that are affordable for the average family.
The other reason is quality of life. While it's easy to enjoy concerts, dining and going out when you're visiting Detroit, finding a wage that sustains living in the better parts of the city, is extremely hard.
So while it's not impossible to be a renter in Detroit, don't be surprised if you struggle to find that perfect place to land. Thankfully, lots of the suburbs around the city may be able to offer you something a little better if you don't mind the commute.
