According to the CDC, the norovirus is a very contagious virus that causes vomiting and diarrhea. Anyone can catch this virus which is sometimes referred to as stomach flu or stomach bug. The norovirus is not related to the flu, which is caused by the influenza virus.

The best way to avoid norovirus is to stay away from those who you know have the virus. Wash your hands often with warm water and soap. Rinse fruits and vegetables before eating them since other people may have handled them. Stay home if you catch the virus for two days after the symptoms stop to not spread the virus to others, you can still be contagious even though you no longer have symptoms. Do not prepare food for others when you have the virus.

Unfortunately, there is no treatment for norovirus. Once you have the virus you have to let it run its course. The best thing to do is stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids to replace those lost to diarrhea and vomiting.
