Gov Whitmer Wants to Make Statewide Face Mask Law
Even though the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services’ mask order was already put in place, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is looking for help from the Republican-controlled legislature to take things a bit further. She wants to make it an official law.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the governor said she sent a letter to Republican lawmakers this week asking them to pass a bill. Lawmakers, especially Republicans leading the House and Senate, have asked to have more of a role in the process of tackling the pandemic, Whitmer noted. Now is their time to act.
Gov Whitmer:
This is the law under epidemic orders. But we do think it would be helpful to our health, our safety and our economy if it was codified in a bipartisan (manner at) the Legislature, and that's what we've asked for.
We've known for a long time that the single most important weapon that we have against this virus is the simple task of wearing a mask.
Look, I'm all about wearing a mask but I don't think we need to make it an official law. Personally, I think that's taking it a bit too far. The order is already in place and while I understand people are sick and tired of wearing them, they're doing it anyway. I keep hearing about people not wearing masks but everywhere I go, that's all I see. People are wearing freaking masks. As the numbers continue to rise, I'm starting to question masks more than I ever did before. Of course, I will continue to wear one. Honestly, I don't think it's a big deal but I don't think it needs to be an official law.
