Michigan’s Giant Troll: Meet Benny the Beard Fisher

Did you know that there's a giant troll living in Michigan's Upper Peninsula?

I know — normally when we talk about trolls in conjunction with Michigan, we're talking about people who live "under the bridge", so to speak... Michiganders who live in the Lower Peninsula, and therefore, under the Mackinac Bridge.

However, I'm not talking about those kind of trolls.

Who Is Thomas Dambo?

I'm talking about a giant wooden troll made by artist Thomas Dambo.

Thomas Dambo is a Danish recycle artist and activist, and he uses recycled and found materials to make these larger-than-life trolls all over the world.

So far, there are 171 trolls in at least 17 countries, and one of them is located right here in the great state of Michigan.

Meet Benny the Beard Fisher.

Where to Find Michigan’s Giant Troll

Benny is troll number 118 and he's located on the banks of the Manistique River at Northland Outfitters Campground & Canoe in Germfask.

Benny is 14 feet tall, 30 feet long, and you can catch him lounging along the banks and using his impressively long branch beard to "fish" in the river.

While his head was made in Denmark, the rest of Benny was built on-site from recycled wood and other found materials.

Benny was installed in 2023 and since then has had a huge following. People have gotten engaged in front of Benny, and one couple even got married there.

But, you don't need a special occasion to see him. You can just made the drive to Germfask, pay your $10 per car, and see Benny in person.
