Let's face it—winter is going to winter.

And what I mean by that is, we know it's going to be a cold, snowy, and possibly harsh winter. Cold winters and long nights are rough in Michigan, so we have to make the best of it with laughter and light.

Making the Best of Winter in Michigan

That's why I love the fact that Michigan has names for its snowplows.

The Michigan Department of Transportation has a whole fleet of snowplows across the state to make sure that the roads are ready for us to navigate in inclement weather. And while I'm eternally grateful for the hard work it takes to keep the roads clean, I'm equally thankful for the hilarious and pun-tastic names that the snowplows have.

MDOT Snowplow Names

Some names are celebrity or movie puns; others are shout outs to local landmarks; while others are just plain obscure. And more often than not, they have some kind of wintry twist.

MDOT did us a favor and put together a list of the different names and the regions they're from. Here are some of my favorites from each region. Be prepared, as some regions just had so many to choose from, it was hard to pick favorites.

  • Blue Water Bridge Region - Salt Shaker
  • Bay Region - Frankenmuth Chicken, I'd Rather Be at the Beach, and Saltosaurus Rex
  • Grand Region - Fast and Flurryous, Marshmallow, Scooper McGavin, and The Big LePlowski
  • Metro Region - Droppin' Salt Like It's Hot
  • North Region - Everyday I'm Shovelin' and  Han Snow-lo
  • Superior Region - Nick Flurry, Snowba Fett, and Yooper Scooper
  • Southwest Region - Anita Shovel, Betty Whiteout, Ctrl Salt Delete, Darth Blader, Plowabunga, and Sir Salts-A-Lot, Sodium Slinger
  • University Region - Big Penny, Austin Plowers, Creedence Clear-Road Revival, Dolly Plowton, Kaplowie, Ol' Gus, Saltnado, Still Shorts Weather, and Yeet Sleet

I know I gave you a hearty list of favorites, but it's hard to narrow down 398 snowplow names to your favorite. If you want to see the full list and watch a live feed of the snowplows, check it out HERE
