Burn Ban Issued For Meridian Township
A burn ban has been issued for all residents living in Merdian Township effective immediately from the Merdian Township Fire Department, according to WILX.
The big brush fire in Leslie, which you can see below, as well as another structure fire in Okemos, lead to the rise of concerns to implement a burn ban.
“With the relatively dry winter and early snowmelt, we are in a situation with lots of dry vegetation at ground level without any recent rainfall,” Tavis Millerov, a fire inspector said. “To complicate matters further, the increased wind conditions over the last one to two weeks makes small fires spread quickly and further dries out any moisture left in the dead vegetation. I foresee these conditions lasting until we get some significant rainfall.”
Some things to remember when having a fire in Meridian Township, it is not acceptable to burn garbage, leaves, brush, grass clippings, or other building materials, per the Meridian Township burning regulations. According to Meridian Township to what's considered a recreational fire, is a fire pit that is used for food or to gather around for pleasure or a ceremony. A minimum of 12' is required for depth for a pit as well as 3-foot diameter.
You can receive two different types of fire permits in the Township, whether it be recreational fire permits or rural residential open burning permits.
