There's something about coney dogs that has Michigan and its residents in a chokehold.

I can't even begin to explain Michigan's ferocious feelings when it comes to coney dogs. Not only do people have a style preference (you're either Detroit-style or Flint-style, and there is no in-between...), but they also have a location preference.

Detroit Coney Islands

In fact, the "feud" between Lafayette Coney Island and American Coney Island goes back to the 1920s, when the brother of the owner of American Coney Island split from that location and opened his own coney island, Lafayette Coney Island, right next door. And just like the rivalry between Flint-style and Detroit-style chili, people pick sides when it comes to which coney island they'll patronize, and you can't change their loyalty.

Anthony Bourdain's Favorite Detroit Coney Island

Here's the thing; If you happen to not have a preference between American Coney Island and Lafayette Coney Island, why not try someplace different? Perhaps, a location that was Anthony Bourdain's favorite when he came through Detroit.

Thanks to The Detroit Diet on Instagram, I learned that Duly's Place Coney Island was Anthony Bourdain's favorite coney spot in Detroit.

Bourdain featured Duly's on his show, Parts Unknown, on Season 2 Episode 8, Detroit.

Bourdain dubbed Duly's coney dog "delicious", and the "best of [his] three coney experiences". And while Bourdain may have only had three coney experiences up until that point, the man knew his food. So, credit where credit is due...Duly's probably serves up a delicious coney dog. Here a picture to prove it.

While a picture may be worth a thousand words, you can't taste a picture. If you want to see for yourself, and maybe do a little taste test to see which coney dog comes out on top (American, Lafayette, or Duly's), Duly's is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and located at 5458 Vernor Hwy in Detroit.
