Well, I can't say I didn't expect this to happen after Consumers Energy announced that they were going to be increasing their rates this summer. However, I didn't expect them to shoot for 90%.

Yeah, you read that correctly, 90%.

DTE's proposed rate increase

According to WILX, Michigan's Attorney General Dana Nessel is attempting to keep our bills affordable after receiving a request for a $195 million increase from DTE Gas Co.

Nessel stated in her testimony on June 3, that DTE shouldn't receive more than a $19 million annual increase and that it should be distributed fairly.

She told WILX that she finds the increase unnecessary and excessive. The last thing she wants is for Michiganders to be blindsided with a high utility bill after the year we've had.

Michiganders have been through a lot over the past year-plus, and I want to help make sure ratepayers are not blindsided by large increases in utility bills just when we are starting to see signs of returning to normalcy.

Why Consumers Energy increased their rates

Consumers Energy increased their rates last week and will remain at a 50% increase through the end of September.

They've decided to increase their rates because they anticipated more usage this summer. They also mentioned that some of their power plants don't get much use throughout the rest of the year.

Did I mention that the increase is during peak hours from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.?

Yup, just in time for you to get home and spend the next hour cooking over a hot stove  when the sun is at it's prime and beaming down. How convenient.
