World Population Review is out with its annual list of the 20 Most Violent Cities in America, and it's not great news for Michigan.

Michigan is one of five states with multiple entries in the Top 20, along with Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and California.

What Causes a City to Be Considered "Violent"?

For purposes of this study, violent cities were considered to be those that had higher than their fair share of violent crimes - things like murder, assault, robbery, kidnapping, etc. Rates of sexual assault, rape and manslaughter were also taken into account.

Which Cities Are the Most Violent Cities in America?

The most recent statistics from the federal government show that for every 100,000 people in the United States, there are roughly 369 violent crimes.

Rates are much higher than that in some American cities, however. For example, the newest stats show an estimated 2,057 violent crimes per 100,000 residents in Detroit, Michigan - that's second-highest in the country, behind only St. Louis, Missouri, with 2,082 violent crimes per 100,000 residents.

The 20 most violent cities in the United States all have violent crime rates that are in excess of 1,000 incidents per 100,000 residents.

The list includes four state capitals: Little Rock, Arkansas at #4; Indianapolis, Indiana at #12; Nashville, Tennessee at #16; and Lansing, Michigan at #17.
