White Shoal Lighthouse has stood a lonely sentinel in Lake Michigan, twenty miles west of the Straits of Mackinac since 1910. Now in 2019, the lighthouse will open to the public for tours and overnights for the first time.

The structure is under the care of the White Shoal Light Historical Preservation Society. They announced on New Year's Day:

Beginning on July 20th 2019, White Shoal Light Historical Preservation Society will be hosting guests for day-tours and even select overnight stays! We are opening the doors a full 5 years ahead of our original schedule in order to share our vision with you! If you happen to be interested in abandoned and isolated historic structures, these tours will be of particular interest…there will no doubt be something for everyone as you stand on the parapet and take in the astounding 360-degree views! Exciting details about schedules and tours will be announced throughout the month of January 2019 and tickets will go on sale beginning in February.

This will be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view and photograph White Shoal before access once again becomes extremely limited during the planned 5-year restoration process. By participating in the many exciting events we are planning for the summer of 2019, you will be helping us raise the much-needed funding to restore this Queen of Great Lakes Lighthouses! Stay tuned as we reveal additional exciting details in the coming weeks!

Follow the Society on Facebook to get their updates and get to know the light before you go with this 2017 video tour.
