Bring On the Tears: Michigan Shelter Dog Breaks Out to Hang Out at Nursing Home

If you're like me and you're the type of person who cries at sappy stuff, you might want to grab a tissue before you read any further, because this story is about to bring on the waterworks.

Michigan Dog Sneaks into Nursing Home

One night some time ago in northern Michigan, a Houdini dog by the name of Scout proceeded to escape the animal shelter he was in and secretly absconded to a nursing home nearby, Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility. A staff member at the care facility found him the next morning, he was curled up on a couch in the lobby.

Now, this is a pretty big deal, especially when you take into consideration all that it took for Scout to get from the shelter to the nursing home. According to the Detroit Free Press, Scout had to scale "a 10-foot chain-link fence, then a 6-foot solid privacy fence, cross a highway without getting run over" all before being able to walk into the nursing home unnoticed.

And Scout did this not once, or twice, but three times!

Michigan Nursing Home Adopts Shelter Dog Who Kept Sneaking In

After the third time, Marna Robertson, the nursing home's administrator, took that as a sign that Scout belonged at the nursing home and they officially adopted him.

Scout seems to be the sweetest dog, and he treats all the residents with such kindness and gentleness. Robertson says,

He certainly has a penchant for the elders. He’s very in tune with what they need, especially our very vulnerable population. If they have dementia or if they’re dying he knows that, and he will go and be with them and comfort them. He must’ve just felt like he needed to be here.

And the residents adore him too. Many residents keep dog treats either in their rooms or even on their walkers so they can be sure to give Scout a biscuit when he comes by. And like any good dog, Scout knows where all the best dog treats are!

They don't know too much about Scout, only that he may have endured some abuse in the past. There are the tell-tale pockmarks of BBs around his mouth. But despite his past challenges, Scout is definitely a good boy.
