This weekend, up in Bay City, you can watch the Michigan Aerobatic Open, as some of the best aerobatic pilots in the Midwest (and maybe a few from Canada) compete to see who's the best.

According to MLive.com, the competition will run both Saturday and Sunday at James Clements Airport on River Road. It's free and open to the public.

And this is NOT an airshow. These are pilots being judged on how precisely they can do aerobatic maneuvers in a measured amount of airspace. So, there won't be any jets or formation flying - but it is cool to watch. And believe me - given the right airplane and a few hours of instruction, anybody can do a loop - but try doing a perfect loop.

Go ahead - I'll wait.

Back in the day, when I HAD an aerobatic airplane and was living in Pittsburgh, I had plans to come up and fly in the Michigan Open, but it just never happened. Michigan has had some great aerobatic pilots come out of here. Henry Haigh, from Howell, was World Champion in 1988 when he was 64. Henry passed away last year at the age of 89.

We'll see how the weather goes this Sunday. Maybe I'll see you up there.
