In my opinion, it's rare that a TV special lives up to the hype. Last night (Sunday) the tribute to the Beatles 50th anniversary of their first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show....did. With Keith Urban and Brad Paisley doing a great job and showing some love from the country music world.

OK, so I'm 54 years old. I don't know if it was the FIRST appearance by the Beatles, but I do remember watching the Beatles on the Ed Sullivan Show around that time. And what I remember most was my dad commenting on the length of their hair. He was not a fan. By the time the Beatles were hanging out with the Maharishi, in 1967, they had to be driving my dad NUTS!

Anyway, The L.A. Times has gone way back in the archives to get the reviews (from themselves and other newspapers and magazines) of that first Beatles' appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show. Seems not everybody was a fan.

Even the L.A. Times called their hair "bizarre shrubbery".

And my dad looks down and nods in agreement.
