You'll Love Building Gingerbread Houses this Christmas

I'm in the Christmas spirit big time this year. We've got our tree up and decorated, the inside of our home is decorated and I pulled a Clark Griswold on the exterior of our home.

A tradition that we started many years ago was building gingerbread houses with our kids each year. It's a lot of fun and it gives us some good family time without screens! Do you do this as a yearly tradition at your home?

What's the history of gingerbread houses asscociated at Christmas? Who thought it would be a cool idea to turn food into decor? According to The Guardian, gingerbreadhouses have been popular for a long time:

The tradition of decorated gingerbread houses began in Germany in the early 1800s, supposedly popularised after the not-so-Christmassy fairytale of Hansel and Gretel was published in 1812.

Gingerbread cookies also coincide with Christmas. I have yet to see a fresh batch of gingerbread cookies in June.

Although building gingerbreadhouses can be messy, it's a small price to pay to see kids smile. Be the parent that creates these awesome memories for your kids, they will share those memories with their children too. Tradtions begin with you.

Finding a gingerbread house locally is an easy task. The Christmas spirit is alive and well this year in mid Michigan, don't wait until the last minute to try to buy a gingerbread house kit. You might have a hard time finding one.
