According to the Detroit Free Press, a major winter storm is set to wreak havoc in Michigan and across the United States.  More than a foot of snow in some places, coating other areas in heavy ice along with freezing temperatures.

Here in the Greater Lansing area, we have a winter weather advisory until 12 p.m. Tuesday.  We could see anywhere from 5 to 7 inches of snow.  My snow blower is gassed up and ready to go.

In Michigan, a winter storm warning is in effect in the southeast part of the state until noon Tuesday.  That includes Genesee, Lapeer, Lenawee, Livingston, Macomb, Monroe, Oakland, Sanilac, St. Clair, Washtenaw and Wayne Counties.  (Detroit Free Press)

Anytime you're going above six inches of snow, you're talking about a snowstorm.  So it's very important to be prepared.  And it doesn't hurt to have an emergency kit.

Here are several items you should have in your emergency kit:

1.  Water, at least 3 gallons of water per person.

2.  Food, at least a three day supply of nonperishable food per person.

3.  Prescribed medications.

4.  Flashlight and extra batteries.

5.  Extra clothes and blankets.

When a winter storm does hit your area, there are a couple of things you need to know:

1.  If you lose power, the weather will be cold enough to keep food or perishable items in a sealed plastic bin on your porch, vehicle, or in the garage.

2. Don't rely on candles.  A report by the National Fire Protection Association found burning candles are a major cause of death when the lights go out.

3.  Use flashlights, headlamps, battery operated lanterns or glow sticks rather than candles or other flammable lighting sources.
