Will the COVID-19 Vaccine Cost Me Money?
The COVID-19 vaccine is almost here, and millions of doses will be administered in the coming days, many in Michigan. That time can't come soon enough. But, there is somewhat of a worry of how much will it cost and will insurance cover it. The answer is a good one!
The two major health insurers in Michigan, Priority Health and Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan both announced that they would cover the costs of the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available. Fox 17 reported that Blue Cross said all copays, deductibles and coinsurance will be waived for COVID-19 vaccines. This is for individuals with commercial plans. Medicare will cover vaccine costs for Medicare members.
Daniel Loepp, president and CEO of Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan said:
The availability of FDA-authorized vaccines for COVID-19 is a critical phase in our shared effort to defeat the virus, improve the health of our communities and resume our pre-pandemic routine. Blue Cross wants to ensure that the copay doesn’t stand in the way of our members having ready access to vaccinations when the time comes.
Priority Health says regarding treating members diagnosed with COVID-19, that they will continue to waive all copays, deductibles and coinsurance for medically necessary treatment of COVID-19 through March 31, 2021. This means all fully funded commercial, individual, Medicaid and Medicare members can get the treatment they need for COVID-19 with no out-of-pocket health insurance costs. Covered treatment may be inpatient or outpatient from an in-network provider. Patients must have a confirmed primary COVID-19 diagnosis and be receiving evidence-based care for treatment to be fully covered. And, when the COVID-19 vaccine is finally available to the public, members will have no out-of-pocket costs.
Great news! Finally, there are sunny days ahead!
