How do you feel about roundabouts? I love them and think we need more in Michigan. The only downfall is that some people don't know how the heck to use them!

You're probably like, "Wow, Erica, I didn't know you were so passionate about roundabouts."

Listen, I just think they're convenient. Stop signs are annoying, you have to come to a complete stop even if there isn't a car in sight. I've got places to go and people to see, 'ain't nobody got time' to come to a complete stop.

Now, you're probably wondering why I even decided to spend my spare time talking about roundabouts.

Well, I was on my way to the Kroger in Okemos the other day and got to the roundabout at Hamilton and Marsh and cruised right through that bad boy with no stopping or complications because everyone knew how to use it.

How to Use a Roundabout

When I started driving, I wasn't a fan of roundabouts and mainly because I didn't understand what I was supposed to be doing. I remember thinking to myself, "Did I sleep through this part of drivers training?"

Here's how to use a roundabout:

  • First things first, yield to pedestrians. They have the right of way.
  • Yield to other drivers who are currently moving through the roundabout.
  • Pick your lane and stay there until you exit!
  • Follow the road markings and use your turn signal to alert other drivers which direction you're going.

If you're more of a visual person, here's a quick video for you!

Roundabouts in Michigan

Some cities throughout Michigan are adding more roundabouts in order to decrease traffic and accidents in certain areas.

According to WILX, the Collins and Forest Road intersection is closed because a roundabout is being added. Another one was recently built near the Horrocks in Lansing, Grand Ledge, and Jackson will be adding one soon.

Despite my love roundabouts, they can still be dangerous if they're not used properly.

One of the most dangerous roundabouts in Michigan is located in Sterling Heights at 18 1/2 mile and Van Dyke. If you've been over that way before, you know the exact roundabout I'm talking about near Dodge Park.

LOOK: See how much gasoline cost the year you started driving

To find out more about how has the price of gas changed throughout the years, Stacker ran the numbers on the cost of a gallon of gasoline for each of the last 84 years. Using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics (released in April 2020), we analyzed the average price for a gallon of unleaded regular gasoline from 1976 to 2020 along with the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for unleaded regular gasoline from 1937 to 1976, including the absolute and inflation-adjusted prices for each year.

Read on to explore the cost of gas over time and rediscover just how much a gallon was when you first started driving.
