What The Heck Is Egg Nog?

I am a huge fan of egg nog. All I know is that it's tasty, sweet and served around the holidays, no booze for me. The rest is a mystery I will try to uncover.

Wikipedia says that egg nog is:

historically also known as a milk punch or an egg milk punch when alcoholic beverages are added, is a rich, chilled, sweetened, dairy-based beverage. It is traditionally made with milk, cream, sugar, egg yolks, and whipped egg whites (which gives it a frothy texture, and its name). Distilled spirits such as brandy, rum, whisky or bourbon are often a key ingredient.

Now that you know the definition of what egg nog is, let's explore some of the history. Egg nog has been around a long time. The Spruce Eats says:

It is believed that eggnog began in Europe. As early as the 13th century, medieval monks in Britain were known to drink "posset," a warm ale punch with eggs and figs. Over time, this likely merged with the various milk and wine punches often served at social gatherings.

I am grateful I wasn't drinking egg nog in the 13th century. That doesn't sound tasty at all.

When I was a kid I made homemade egg nog. Although it was fun to do, it was time consuming and nowadays I buy my egg nog at the store. Perhaps down the road that could be a new tradition we start at home, making homemade egg nog.
