Unpopular Opinion: Valentine’s Day Is Overrated
Valentine's Day who? Never heard of it. I wish that was the case. Let me start off by saying I don't hate Valentine's Day. I'm just not a fan. And no, it's not because I've spent a majority of them as single as a one dollar bill, I just think it's extremely overrated.
If you don't already know, Valentine's Day, also known as St. Valentine's Day is February 14th. For those of you who do know is it because you've already been thrown in the dog house once for forgetting? The holiday originated from the Roman festival of Lupercalia where they celebrated the coming of spring and the pairing of a woman and man by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, it became a day to celebrate romance.
Maybe, I don't like it because we live in a world revolved around social media. My problem isn't seeing people's posts of what their significant other has done for them that day. It's the people who complain about spending another one alone. Listen, I've spent the last 6 with my cat as my valentine. I'm not complaining. He likes to cuddle and he doesn't nag me for not remembering to bring home flowers.
But my main reason I think it's overrated is because people use it as a day to express their undying love for their partner. Why do you need a specific day to do that? You should be doing that everyday. Life is short. So, don't pick one day out of the year to do something or say something nice. Do it everyday, even when you want to knock them upside the head with your frying pan.
